Temporary teaching and research assistant (ATER)

The temporary teaching and research assistant (ATER) contract allows students to prepare a PhD or to take competitive recruitment exams in higher education, while at the same time teaching on a fixed-term contract.

ATERs are governed by the amended Decree no. 88-654 of May 7, 1988, for the recruitment of temporary teaching and research assistants in public higher education institutions.

Who can apply?

You can apply for an ATER position if you are:
  • Category A public sector worker or trainee registered to prepare a PhD or a research supervisor qualification, or already hold one of these two qualifications, and if you undertake to take part in a competitive recruitment examination for higher education.
  • a student, including a doctoral students on a fixed-term contract, about to complete your thesis with a certificate from your thesis supervisor stating that you can defend your thesis within one year.
  • a candidate with a PhD or a research supervisor qualification, and if you undertake to take part in a competitive recruitment examination for higher education.
  • a foreign teacher or researcher who has held a teaching or research position in a foreign higher education or research institution for at least two years, and hold a PhD or a foreign qualification exempted from the doctoral requirement by the institution's academic board. Exemption is granted only for the year and recruitment for which the application is submitted.

How to apply?

Submitting an application involves several stages.

Step 1: register on the Altaïr app via the GALAXIE portal


Log on to the Altair app
You'll be redirected to a French site.

Step 2: Submit your application

Applications must be submitted to the Université Grenoble Alpes OGRATER app before the campaign period ends.
Incomplete applications will be declared nul and void.
Log-in details for OGRATER will be sent automatically within 48 hours.

You'll be redirected to a French site.

Which documents do I need to provide?

 All applications must include the following documents:
  •     Dated and signed Altaïr application form (no receipt)
  •     Curriculum vitae and a research project (for your ATER year at UGA)
  •     Copy of valid ID (recto-verso identity card or passport)
  •     A sworn statement that you have ATER status (This document is written in French)

The above mentioned documents must be accompanied by additional documents depending on your situation:

You are a category A public sector worker or trainee (Art. 2.1):

  • Attach a copy of your appointment or promotion, specifying your grade.
  • Attach the request for secondment for permanent staff (download the standard form, this document is written in French), or the request for leave without pay for trainee staff (download the standard form, this document is written in French).
  • If you hold a PhD or a research supervisor qualification: enclose a copy of the PhD or research supervisor degree or a foreign degree justifying a request for equivalence + a commitment to take part in a competitive exam in higher education (download standard form).
  • If you do not hold a PhD: attach proof of enrolment for a PhD or research supervisor qualification for the current academic year (e.g. PhD enrolment certificate).

If you are a foreign lecturer or researcher (Art. 2.3):

  •     Attach a copy of the PhD or foreign degree justifying your request for equivalence.
  •     Attach any official document certifying that, on September 1, 2022, the applicant hds held a teaching and/or research position in a foreign higher education and/or research institution for at least 2 years.

You are a student who has not completed a PhD (Art 2.5) :

  •     Attach proof of enrolment for a PhD for the current academic year (e.g. PhD enrolment certificate).
  •     Attach a signed certificate from your thesis supervisor stating that the thesis can be defended before August 31, 2025. (download standard form, this document is written in French)

You hold a PhD or Research Supervisor qualification (Art 2.6):

  •     Attach a copy of your PhD, research supervisor qualification or foreign diploma justifying your request for equivalence.
  •     Enclose an undertaking to take part in a competitive recruitment exam in higher education (download standard form, this document is written in French).
